Virtualization Solutions – A Success Story!
Here is a success story of how virtualization solutions have successfully revolutionized a business data center. It is no secret that the IT industry is a happening place and businesses are disappointed by the debut of the next big introduction in the field of hardware or software, which invariably turns out to have a lot of glitches and does not run as smoothly as it is supposed to.
People are very weary when it comes to adopting a new technology and will rather wait for someone else to test it out and wait for the feedback before they test the waters so to speak. However, virtualization solutions is something that has taken the market by storm, because it not only delivers as promised, in most cases it has over delivered, as people are finding out that there is more to virtualization than has been discovered till now.
There is evidence about the efficiency and success of virtualization solutions in many businesses that have virtualized their servers and data centers. One such success story is that of the Charlotte Observer, published in Information Week in their December 18 th 2006 issue. Charlotte Observer had a 2000 square foot area crammed with one hundred and fifty Intel based servers for their data center, and they required more servers to cope with the demand.
Virtualization Solution to the Rescue
This is when the manager of the data center Geoff Shorter decided to resort to virtualization solutions and morphed single purpose machines into virtual servers, a process that took all of 14 months to complete. The result was mind boggling. Charlotte Observer had, in the process of virtualization reduced as many as 120 servers; this opened up a lot of space in their data center and also reduced their power bills by 50%. The power bills were reduced because the servers and their peripheral gadgets such as network switches and hubs as well as cooling equipment were eliminated. The bills which were about $7,000 per month were reduced to $3,500 per month. Their virtualization solutions promise to the total number of servers down to 30 in the next three years. The data center itself will reduce to a mere 800 square feet down 1200 square feet from 2000.
Virtualization solutions are going to be extensively discussed on a future talk show on CIOtalk Radio. You could be a part of this discussion or just tune in and listen. You will be amazed at what virtualization solutions can do for your business and pocket. |
