 Phil Hochmuth

Phil Hochmuth is a principal analyst in Yankee Group's Anywhere Enterprise research group, with a focus on cloud computing. Phil's research analyzes enterprise demand for cloud computing, including the adoption drivers and inhibitors of software-, platform- and infrastructure-as-a-service models in the enterprise. Phil's research also analyzes and evaluates current cloud computing technologies and business models from both a vendor and provider perspective. A particular focus of his research and consulting work is to help service providers understand and leverage "as-a-service" technologies, both as a revenue-generating opportunity and a way to increase carriers' operational efficiencies and reduce their costs.

Prior to Yankee Group, Phil was a senior editor at Network World magazine, covering enterprise routing and switching technology, wireless LANs, VoIP and unified communications, as well as Linux and open-source software. Before that, Phil was a systems integrator for a New Hampshire-based VAR, installing networks and prepress systems for clients in the newspaper and publishing industry.

Have cloud vendors created reliable solutions that are flexible enough to accommodate the majority of their clients’ needs far into the future, or are they still working things out as they go along? Do the buyers of cloud solutions have a clear understanding of how what works for them today, will scale tomorrow as their businesses grow? While vendors are moving quickly to sell solutions, perhaps adopters are holding back, fearing they may lock themselves into something with unknown implications. What problems still remain to be worked out, before we fully unleash Cloud Computing?
